I am often reminded by my Godmother (A3Traveller herself) of what I was like as a child – I am sure that I am not the only one who is! She has two favourite tales to tell. The first how as a blonde ringlet-ed child, in pink dungarees, I tried to pick up cannon balls (which were fixed together) at Southsea Castle. The second is how when asked where I wanted to go of a weekend, the answer was always BirdWorld. So at the age of 31 and a half, I took my husband there last weekend on a trip down memory lane!

The park is a 26 acre, family-run sanctuary to hundreds of unusual birds, a petting farm, (that is also home to a pair of reindeer) and a small aquarium. And it is just how I remember it, including the flamingos – who apparently were my favourite (and still are) due to our shared love of Ketchup – it’s how they get their pink hue don’t you know!

There is a busy schedule of daily events from keeper talks to feeds to two amazing daily shows, the Outdoor Flying Display and the Discovery Theatre Show. While there (in the morning) we saw the African penguin feeding at 11.00 and the pelican feeding at 12.00 (times may vary and there are also events in the afternoon).

It really is a great day out and so easy to reach – signposted all the way form the A3 to the front door. Luckily if your children are anything like I was, the park is also open 363 days a year (closed Christmas Day and Boxing Day) so you really can just fly by anytime. You never know you might just make a new friend…

In high season, adult tickets cost GBP15.95 with child tickets starting at GBP12.95.
